It’s not that cold, yet, but the changing seasons can be felt. The trees are beginning to change colors, and the wind is already blowing some fallen leaves…
Time to think of new rigging projects for my fishing kayak. Continue reading

Why Hasn’t The Kayak Replaced The Canoe As King Of Non Motorized Fishing In Canada?

In my opinion, we’re left with reality, and in reality, canoes offer better protection to their passengers than kayaks do, whether those are sit-on-top (SOT) kayaks, or more traditional sit-in kayaks (SIK). And why is this fact important with regard to fishing in Canada? Obviously because SOT kayaks and Sit-In kayaks are less practical for fishing in colder climates, where both water and weather require that boaters stay as dry as possible. Continue reading

Hey Northern Kayak Anglers – Summer Is Over, Autumn Is Here

It’s September 21st, the last day of summer or the first day of autumn? I guess it depends how you want to look at it. For kayak anglers up north it means shorter days, colder water, and more cases of nasty, or at least uncooperative weather. Upstate New York Kayak Angler’s Point Of View On Fishing Kayaks

Some physical issues were limiting where I could launch my sit-in kayak, not to mention how long I could endure the cramped paddling positions. Who of us hasn’t dreamed of standing up to rest our back and legs? Or going ashore anywhere, anytime staying bone dry and comfortable all day. When I found the W500, I knew I had at least 10 more years of the water. Continue reading

What Northern Kayak Fishing Is About

Kayaks were invented by Inuits, who are people living in the arctic circle. But kayak fishing as a recreational sport, or outdoor activity, is largely a southern phenomenon, meaning it became much more popular in the Southeastern, Southern, and Southwestern regions of the United States, than in the Northern, colder regions.
In sum, considering the fact that SOT kayaks, and even sit-in kayaks offer too little stability, comfort and protection from the elements, and considering these facts also imply a lesser degree of safety for the angler, it is easy to understand why the numbers of kayak anglers in the north are far less impressive than they are in the south.
